GCC Shopping Round Up

***Don't Forget To Enter The Giveaway HERE!***

Now, I remember why we don't eat cereal. Did you know that one teeny tiny box of cookie crisp is over $4? Holy Moly! That's one bowl of cereal for each of my four kids. $4 for one non-nutritious meal that will leave them hungry again an hour later. But....it's a fun treat, especially for a birthday breakfast.

I have to admit, I seriously considered NOT fulfilling that birthday wish for my daughter. I think I probably stood in that cereal aisle for 20 minutes trying to decide whether I was going to go through with it or not. You see, the problem with frugality is that when you fully adopt it, it changes the way you think about purchases. You feel a little bit more of a responsibility with your money and it's really hard to intentionally make a purchase that you know is a splurge.

Do you find that happens to you too?

Menu Plan Monday

We had a terrific series of Thanksgivings to attend this weekend and I have more leftovers in my fridge than I know what to do with. Some ended up in the freezer but most of it will be disguised this week into a series of dinners. So my efforts are concentrated around using what I have on hand except for Friday when we'll be celebrating my daughters 13th birthday. Our tradition is that the birthday girl or boy gets to pick all three meals for the day. So you'll see some things on our menu that you wouldn't normally see. But for birthdays, we don't hold back...or obviously care about nutrition.

Breakfasts

Cheese omelettes and toast
Smoothies and whole grain cinnamon toast
Captain Crunch Cereal with chocolate milk to drink
Poached eggs, toast, fruit cups
Leftover pancakes

Birthday Lunch

Giant Mall Pretzels with marinara and cheese dipping sauces, grape juice

Dinner

Turkey Vegetable Soup and leftover rolls
Thanksgiving Memories Casserole (layered stuffing, potatoes, gravy, green beans and turkey topped with cheese and heated in the oven)
Freezer Meal - Ham and bean soup and rolls
Turkey Stir Fry over rice
Leftover Buffet

I've got a great giveaway going up sometime on Monday so you won't want to miss that. You can check back tomorrow to see how my $60 per week budget stretched this week. Should be easy since I had so many leftovers but you just never know. AND to see more menu plans go HERE.

Homemade Hand Sanitizer

I had a reader ask me how to make homemade hand sanitizer so I did a little digging and YES it's possible. There were a gazillion recipes out there but not all were efficiently made to kill germs. The main thing I found out is that in order for it to properly kill germs it must have at least 60% alcohol in the recipe.

Here's a link to a simple but effective recipe to kill germs.

I like the thought of making our own because you can control the ingredients in it but I'm wondering how cost effective it is since I can buy some at the dollar store. So you'll have to decide if price is more important than healthy ingredients or vice versa. For me, I like being able to control the chemicals and have it smell the way I want it to.

Let me know what you think.

Menu Plan Monday

Yahoo! Let the feasting begin.

I'll be hosting Thanksgiving at my house for 9-ish and we're splitting the work load. We'll eat a very light breakfast since our feast will be at lunchtime and then that evening we visit the other side of the family for dessert. On Saturday is our final Thanksgiving where I'm off the hook and only have to bring a salad.

I'm pretty sure the budget will be blown but I planned for it. I'm going to do my best to keep it reasonable though. Check back tomorrow to see how I did.

Here's what the week will look like at our house.

Breakfast

Oatmeal and pears
Poached eggs and toast
Fruit and yogurt smoothies with bagels
Toast and fruit
Yogurt and granola parfaits
Leftover muffins

Dinners

Spaghetti and green beans
Sausage gravy and biscuits with fruit cups
Soup from the freezer and rolls
Roast turkey sandwiches
Leftover night

Homemade Christmas

We do lot's of homemade Christmas gifts around here for friends and family and all year I've been collecting links to presents I'd like to make and give this season.

Here's directions for homemade soap made in the crockpot. I've purchased all my ingredients and I'm getting ready to make a batch this week. It takes a few weeks to cure so if this interests you it's best to get started on this now. Wouldn't this look pretty packaged up in a basket with a few rolled up wash cloths and a loofah and maybe a few of these fizzy bath bombs to go with it?

Is there somebody in your family who spends lots of time at Starbucks? Try these earth friendly coffee cup sleeves. I've made several of these and they turned out so cute! Package it up with a few homemade flavored sugars for coffee and tea and you have the perfect gift.

You want frugal? How's this. These adorable stuffed hedgehogs are made from a dollar store car mitt. So stinkin' cute for the little one on your list.

Take a $3 frame and a little creativity to create this amazing dry erase wall calendar. I want this for MY wall but it would make a fantastic Christmas gift.

Broken crayons turn into custom monogrammed pictures. Seriously! How do people come up with this cute stuff? Anyone could make this.

So these are some ideas to get your Christmas giving under way. Remember, Christmas doesn't have to be a rack-up-the-credit-card holiday. It doesn't even have to be a spend-100's-of-dollars-in-cash holiday. You can truly make some amazing frugal gifts that are just as wonderful or better than store bought gifts.

And I've got plenty more where that came from so keep your eye out for more Christmas posts coming soon.

Thanksgiving Ideas

I've received lots of questions lately on how to have a frugal Thanksgiving and I've come to a conclusion.

You're going to blow your regular budget on Thanksgiving.

It's a time where you're going to buy more than you normally would. Usually we are feeding a crowd or making special recipes with ingredients that we wouldn't normally buy. But there are still a few practical things we can do to help.

  • Take a poll. Ask your family what they want on their Thanksgiving table. I think you'll be surprised. We found out that the pineapple jello salad that great grandma used to make...well...nobody really likes it. So I'm not making it anymore. Or the sweet potato casserole? Only one person wanted it (sorry Lisa) so I'm not going make it. I just saved myself the cost of getting the ingredients for things that nobody really wanted to eat.

  • Split the work. Are you having a gathering with extended family? Why do you have to make the whole meal? Someone can bring a pie, someone else could bring a vegetable dish, another person could bring an appetizer. That saves you time, money and stress.

  • Take It Easy. Your table doesn't have to be perfectly decorated. You're house doesn't have to be spotless. People are there for the food and the company. Most aren't comparing you to Martha Stewart so no need killing yourself trying to impress. Take your regular dinner table up a notch with a festive tablecloth, sweep the kitchen floor...don't mop. You will survive and they most likely won't even notice.

  • Make Ahead. I decided I didn't want the stress and the rush of cooking my meal all day only to fall exhaustedly into my chair at the Thanksgiving table, unable to enjoy the bounty. I found directions on how to cook my turkey the day before, make ahead mashed potatoes, crockpot stuffing, rolls and pies will be made the day before and even the table can be set the night before. I'm going to have the most relaxed Thanksgiving ever! It will be like being my own guest.

So those are just a few ideas to help minimize cost and stress. Hope they help!

GCC Shopping Round Up

Let me just start by saying that if you are a local the BEST deal in town for a turkey is at Win-co. If you spend $50 you can get a turkey for 22 cents a pound.

You read that right!

You can only get one at a time at that price and then it's 98 cents per pound. But, my plan is to do it again next week so I can store up a turkey in the freezer. Also, I don't normally spend that much at one store so to pad my shopping trip by about $20 more than usual, I got some stocking stuffers like candy, make-up, small toys, and hair accessories.

Two birds with one stone.

And in order to manage Thanksgiving groceries, I'm combining it in the next two grocery shopping trips. So this week I managed to get some of the ingredients for Thanksgiving dinner and next week I'll get the rest.

Here's how it went.

Menu Plan Monday

I ended up NOT using my ham bone from last week so I'll be putting it in my crockpot on Monday morning for a quick dinner that night. I'm also trying a few new recipes this week that look really simple and quick to make. AND, I have two new neighbors. Last week I delivered a basket of fresh blueberry muffins to one of them. This week I have a yummy bread recipe I'll be giving the other neighbors when we go over to meet them.

I tried to use up my pantry supplies in my menu this week to save some money. I want to buy my Thanksgiving turkey this week so that next week I can fit in some of the other Thanksgiving goodies I'd like to buy, rather than having one costly Thanksgiving shopping trip.

Breakfast

Oatmeal with apples and brown sugar
Smoothies and bagels
Oven Omelet and sliced pears
Pancakes with Cinnamon Syrup
Leftover muffins or pancakes

Dinners

Chicken Fried Rice and pot stickers
Homemade soup and rolls
Spaghetti, green beans, garlic rolls
Leftover night

Check back tomorrow to see what I got with my $60 budget. I'll be doing a Thanksgiving post and some Christmas gift posts this week too.

And go HERE to see more great menu plans.

Grocery Cart Challenge Recipe Swap

Ok, think Christmas goodies with this recipe. I love handing out homemade treats to friends for Christmas. Not the standards like chocolate chip cookies or brownies but something different and unique...maybe even NEW. So this recipe is great in cellophane bags with a pretty ribbon at the top and maybe a gift tag with the name of the recipe on it. This recipe is for carmel corn lovers but with a different twist. We really like it.

Caramel Corn Puffs

1 bag or box corn puffs (like Kix or Corn Pops...check bulk bins...about 1 lb)
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup corn syrup
1/2 cup butter
1 teaspoon baking soda

Bring the brown sugar, corn syrup and butter to a boil, add the baking soda and stir Pour the corn puffs into a cake pan and pour the caramel over, stir to coat Bake at 250F, stirring every 10 minutes for 45 minutes. Let cool and enjoy.

Just A Little Housekeeping

I'm so excited for Christmas this year I can barely stand it. If I could get a tree today I would. My last craft bazaar is Friday (tomorrow). If you're a local come say Hi. I'll be at the Canterbury Inn Christmas Bazaar.

Next week I'm hoping to get your creative Christmas juices flowing. I'll be highlighting some great Christmas gift projects that would be fun to give or get and won't put you in debt.

I've also got three giveaways in the works that I'm really excited about. Use your winnings to treat yourself or start your Christmas giving. PLUS lot's of discount codes are coming with those giveaways. I love online shopping for Christmas. So much simpler, less crowded and I can do it in my pajamas.

Now I'm off to finish the last of my sewing projects before the bazaar tomorrow.

Gayle, Gayle, How Does Your Garden Grow?

It's time to put my garden to bed for the winter. I took a walk through the damp withering plants and found a handful of green beans.

Not enough to make a side dish but definitely enough to put in one of my soups this week.

I also found that I had several green cherry tomatoes and at least 6 romas left on the vines. I pulled up the root ball and hung them upside down in my garage to ripen. The nutrients from the roots goes back down to the tips of the plant and turns the green tomatoes red. So we'll be eating a few more garden fresh tomatoes by next week.

Next I'll be using the Lasagna garden method to build up my soil and get it all healthy and nourished during the winter. It also provides amazing weed control so next year I basically just walk into my garden space and begin planting again. No digging, no tilling, no weeding.

I've already starting making a list of new veggies I'd like to add and expansion ideas for next year. I'd like to grow fresh lavender, more fresh herbs to dry and store, more leafy greens, and maybe grow just one crop in each raised bed so I can have plenty to can next year. One bed of tomatoes, one bed of green beans, one bed full of cucumbers for pickling and then one experimental bed for new or smaller crops.

Good news. My transplanted artichoke plant that spent the whole spring and summer recuperating from it's move from my mothers garden to mine, is sprouting beautiful new shoots and I'm looking forward to fresh artichokes on my dinner table.

Menu Plan Monday

Our state requires once a year standardized tests for homeschoolers and with four kids, it takes us a few weeks to get everyone taken care of. This week is our last week of testing. I think one of the main concerns homeschoolers have, regardless of whether they should or not, is whether their kids are keeping up with their public school counterparts and whether they are covering all their bases. It can be a nail biting experience as you await the test results so I'm relieved and happy to report that as anxious as I was, the kids that are finished, exceeded my testing expectations.

Whew! It's like getting my own report card.

So on to frugal stuff.

I found a ham bone tucked away in the back of my freezer from a September birthday. It will be making an appearance in our dinner menu this week. I also have my last craft bazaar on Friday. If you're local, come say Hi. I'll be at the Canterbury Inn. Since I'll be gone from the wee hours of the morning until dinner time I'm letting the family fend for itself for breakfast and I'll slip a yummy stew in the crock pot for dinner.

So here's what's cooking...

Breakfasts

Oats with fruit, cream and brown sugar
Fruit, yogurt and protein powder smoothies
Fruit cups and bagels
on their own for breakfast
Leftover muffins

Dinners

Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup and rolls
Broccoli Rice Quiche and sliced pears
Leftover Buffet

Grocery Cart Challenge Recipe Swap- Another Homemade Fabric Softener

I had a perfectly good recipe on here for a homemade dryer sheet that made my clothes smell good, took out the static and softened the fabric. It worked just great as a sheet. But when I got my new front loader machine and dryer, and the dryer ended up with a stainless steel tub with directions NOT to use dryer sheets (probably because of the wax in the commercial sheets but I wasn't taking any chances) I was in need of a liquid fabric softener. I tried the homemade recipe I had been using and just poured it into the dispenser but I didn't like it as well.

So the hunt for a new cost efficient liquid fabric softener was on. Plus it had to work just as good.

I came across this, gave it a try and now I'm in frugal love. We're talking super cheap and scented just the way I like. Plus it's environmentally friendly it that's something you're concerned about. So now you have two options to choose from.

Homemade Liquid Fabric Softener

1 cup baking soda
6 cups distilled white vinegar
8 cups water

10-15 drops of your favorite essential oil scent. (check my left sidebar under "laundry supplies" for some great essential oils.) I like to use lime, orange, or lavender

You will need a one gallon container. First add the baking soda to the container. Next add 1 cup of water. Slowly add the vinegar to the bottle as the vinegar and baking soda will start to fizz. Don't be worried. Then add the rest of the water swirling around & cover venting the top a few times. Last add the essential oil.
Add 1/2 cup in your final rinse cycle for each load but give the bottle a good shake to stir up the essential oil if using.

Reality Check

Just thought I'd pop in real quick. I wish I had some great frugal idea to give you today but I pretty much avoided the kitchen except for necessities like say breakfast...lunch...and dinner. I've been getting my crafty on for a bazaar that my family and I do every year. So all day I've been down in the basement which houses my bedroom and sewing area, and I only emerged long enough to feed the masses. Well, I did also assign all of the daily housework to the kids (hee hee) and then a few independent school assignments so they wouldn't kill each other with idleness.

To those of you who have emailed me about sponsoring giveaways, I WILL get back to you.

I've got some plans in the works for some Christmas Gift Idea posts like I did last year. I've got some new ideas up my sleeve that might help you with your gift giving.

And I seriously get at least two e-mails a week asking me what I do for lunches so to answer you...

Monday...I can't even remember. But...

Tuesday we created a grilled cheese, bacon and tomato sandwich that was SO very good. It tasted like the grilled sourdough sandwiches that you can get at Jack in the Box.

Today we liked it so much we tried grilled tuna and cheese.

Tomorrows lunch is still a mystery.

And a confession? I was so busy today that I wore my pajamas until 5 pm when I had to take a shower to be able to go to church tonight. And I think it wasn't until about 2 pm before I realized I hadn't brushed my teeth.

How's THAT for a little dose of reality?
