Sharing Our Thrifty Recipes

Sometimes I get really REALLY bored with our menu. It seems like I’m doing the same recipes over and over and over. So I thought it would be a great idea to have a frugal recipe swap and share our ideas. So post your recipe on your blog, with a link back to this post and then add your name to Mr. Linky at the bottom so we can all come visit and fill up our recipe boxes with some thrifty new meals.

Here’s one of mine…

Goulash

1 lb ground beef
½ green bell pepper chopped
1 medium onion chopped
2 cloves garlic chopped
½ tsp salt
½ tsp pepper
3 tablespoons soy sauce
1 can tomato soup
1 can water
1 cup cheese
½ cup rice or elbow macaroni

Brown beef and drain the fat. Add bell pepper, onion, garlic, salt, and pepper to taste. Add soup, water and soy sauce. Put lid on a simmer for 20 minutes. Then add a little more water and either rice or macaroni. Simmer with lid for 15 minutes, stir. Add cheese to the top. Take off stove and keep lid on until cheese melts. Serve with bread and vegetables. Serves 4.

I just wanted to share my version of goulash...which is very creamy and cheap and easy to make:

1 lb. cooked ground beef in onion
1 can of tomato soup
1 can of cream of mushroom
1 1/2 C of elbow macaroni

That's it! Season with salt and pepper...and I usually sprinkle some cheese on it. But, that's it.

I just wanted to share. I love reading your site and using your frugal ideas. They are very inspiring.

I meant to post this weeks ago but completely forgot! You may already know about this but I figured that I'd put it out there just in case. There is a great website called pinchingyourpennies.com that I subscribe to that gives tips on how to save, has grocery coupons, local deals and forums that are full of money saving things catergorized by state. The weekly emails that come out are really useful too. They give internet codes for things like free shipping or perecents off at lots of stores, kohls codes are ALWAYS up there! It has really come in handy!

Okay - I am commenting here to let you know - I entered this and came back later to check out the other recipes - and my link wasn't there anymore. I am not sure what is going on - it might be my computer -
I am sure that the link was there before - but then it was gone. Just FYI!
Thanks for doing this Gayle - It'll be such a blessing to all of us!

I posted a link to two recipes that I think are pretty thrifty:
Lentil with greens soup: lentil soup with Italian sausage and we use spinach instead of escarole and Curried Celery soup (I don't have kids to worry about if they'll like the soup).

The two greatest websites for thrifty recipes:

http://www.tammysrecipes.com/

http://www.hillbillyhousewife.com/

I've saved hundreds by using the recipes on these two sites.

I just commented on another post, but wanted to ask...have you ever heard of Angel Food Ministries? Our church just started doing it...I'm in New England, but it's a southern thing. You get about $65-80 worth of food for $30.
Many families are very blessed with this ministry. See if you have a church doing it locally. If not, maybe it's something to look into.

Great idea! I just found your site and mentioned it on my new blog. I am starting a "journal" of sorts to become more frugal and organized in a way to cut down on expenses and make life easier. Not a fancy blog yet but I am sure it will get going. Come stop by!

I will have to add a Thrifty Recipe to your site soon.

Beef Curry Stew with Rice
pack of stew meat
2 cloves garlic (I use the jar kind)
can of Rotel
can of beef broth or I usually have buillion on hand
1 onion fresh or frozen meal starters
1 TBL curry powder
brown meat in olive oil, set meat aside..soften garlic in pan about 2minutes and add curry powder and Rotel. Layer onions in bottom of slow cooker, then beef..Add your tomato mixture..Cook on low for 6-8 hours..I serve it over rice that I cooked in beef broth and I usually get a loaf of French bread..you could just use tomatoes if you wanted, so it wouldn't be too spicy for the kiddos..and I think last time my husband added a can of stewed tomatoes in addition to the Rotel..

I would like to share my family's favorite meal, and its also a very thrifty one too!
CHICKEN AND NOODLES

2 leg/thigh chicken quarters (cooked in crock pot covered with water, onions, garlic powder, and 2 chicken bouillon cubes) on low for 6 hours or high 3-4 hours. Meat should be falling off the bone.
When meat is done remove from crock pot and seperate the meat from the skin and bones.

While you are doing this start boiling water in a large pot. When it comes to boil, add salt and a 16 oz pkg of shell macaroni. Cook according to package directions.

Meanwhile take the broth from the crock pot and strain it through a wire screen type colander. Then make it into gravy. I use cornstarch mixed with milk as my thickener.

When the gravy is done, add 1 10oz can cream of chicken soup, and one can of creamed corn. Stir well, then add the meat in.

Your noodles should be done boiling by now so drain them and add those to your gravy mixture as well.

Lastly drain a can of peas, and a can of sliced carrots (I usually cut my carrot slices into quarters) and add both to the chicken/pasta gravy mixture, and heat thru.

This is a favorite at my house And my children request it often. (I have 5 boys) Enjoy!
