Spice Mixes On The Cheap

Sharon over at momn4boys asked for my taco seasoning recipe. I buy my spices in bulk to cut costs and then mix this up and keep it in a mason jar in the cupboard.

Taco Seasoning Mix

2 tablespoons chili powder

1 teaspoon garlic powder

¼ teaspoon onion powder

¼ teaspoon dried oregano

½ teaspoon paprika

3 teaspoons cumin

1/2 teaspoon white salt)

1 teaspoon black pepper

1 pinch cayenne pepper (optional or to taste)

Another spice mix I keep on hand is a cinnamon and sugar mixture. I also keep this in a mason jar for cinnamon toast, to sprinkle over the top of my muffins before they bake and for rolling snicker doodle dough in. I don’t really have a recipe to pass on for this. I just mix cinnamon and sugar together and sometimes a little nutmeg.

Any neat spice mixes you’d like to share with us would be welcomed. Just include how you use them and your recipe. I know I’d love to have some fresh ideas.

Well I don't have any super inventive ways to use taco seasoning, but I can tell you how I stretch "taco night" - which does require Taco Seasoning - in our house into two meals!! I take all of the leftovers from that night(meat, beans, cheese, etc.) and I serve it all over nacho chips, usually the next day for lunch and it can be eaten hot of cold. My kids like the idea of eating with their hands so it's a big hit. Also, if you happen to buy the ready made hard shells for tacos you can break up the leftover ones to use as chips if you don't want to buy a whole bag. I think your Southwest Chicken & Rice would be great this way.

You're a genius!

That quiche would be fantastic with ham or bacon in it....

The taco seasoning? Sounds a lot like the seasoning I make. I was forced to do it because of Russell's allergies to corn. I never went back!

The laundry soap? Ummm, my friend Ericka showed me hers and, no offense, but being pregnant, I just can't stand to look at it, let alone use it! I'll stick to my gold plated Tide!

I use Oxy clean too, and a huge Costco sized box has lasted me at least 3 months. I think my mom uses that liquid bluing.

I do about 28 loads of laundry a week, at 4 loads a day.....however, my dryer is currently broken and in the process of getting fixed, so I am having nightmares of the day it gets fixed (tomorrow) and doing 10 loads in one day!!! AHHHHHH!!!!! Making a homemade drying rack and placing it in front of the roaring fireplace was not my idea of fun, especially since it took 10 hours for one load to dry!!!

Anyway, your grocery blog is great, keep it coming!!

Oh, I forgot, I use leftover taco stuff for Enchilada Pie......and we hardly ever have leftovers around here because dinner is Davey's lunch the next day. Yeah, he's spoiled!!

;~)

I just talked to my husband last week about this. I said it seems ridiculous to by these seasoning packets at $1 a pack when they are probably spices I already have. And looky here. Yeah! No more buying those packets.

Some people might not think this is a bargain...however, I do. I buy Fiesta Party Dip Mix from Tastefully Simple for $8.99. It is all natural...it is amazing.
We have "Taco Tuesday" often (my boys love theme dinners.) Using the Fiesta Dip has become such a money saver. I only need to use about a 3/4 TBS for the mince meat. The jar says 3/4 TBS will give you 51 servings. I don't have to use anything else to flavor the food. This is an awesome product. It has this in it: onion, salt, crushed red pepper, paprika, garlic, parsley sugar and spices.
When invited somewhere, it's also great to mix with sour cream and bring crackers or pretzels. I'm always asked about the dip so I know I'm not the only one!
I agree about using the leftovers and making two meals out of one.
My best friend calls these dishes "ish in a pan." She throws a bunch of stuff in a pan, spices it up and serves it over spaghetti or rice. Her kids love ish nights.

Thanks for the taco seasoning recipe! I absolutely love Penzey's spice mixes, but the are so incredibly expensive. Does anyone have a recipe for faux Penzey's Pasta Sprinkle or faux Penzey's Fox Point seasoning mixes?
