Redecorate For Cheap

For reasons too complicated to go into, my two messiest boys that share a room were gone for a few days which gave me the incentive to get in there to paint and organize and secretly trash stuff while they weren’t looking.

When I planned on painting their room I decided to be all thrifty and check my leftover paint that I have stored away from previous projects. I found a royal blue for one wall, enough white to paint all the trim, and decided all I would have to buy would be 2 gallons of tan paint to go with my theme. So I happily hopped in the car to drive to Home Depot and get my 2 gallons of paint.

But after I found the perfect shade I marched over to the base paint section and found out that it was going to cost me $26.97 PER GALLON. Ouch ! That would be over $50!

Then I remembered a friend, who always has a beautifully painted and decorated house, telling me about a place she goes to buy cheap paint. I gave her a call and was on my way.

For those of you who are locals, the place is Fistolera Paint out in Lexington. They are a painting business that has a small storefront where they sell their leftover paint from the jobs they are contracted to do. I walked right in and started perusing the aisles for the color I was looking for but much to my dismay, they didn’t have it. The nice man behind the counter figured it out and asked me what color I wanted. I showed him my little paint chip and he said he could mix it for me.

No kidding.

But it gets even better. He used his old mismatched paints to make my custom color and we got 2 gallons for $11.

Oh yeah, you heard right. $11 total, not each!

So I decided to cruise around town to the paint stores to see if they all had a secret stash of mismatched paints. And sure enough, every single one of them had a whole room full of colors they had mixed up and people had changed their minds about. And they were selling them at DEEP discounts.

So, I thought I would pass that little tidbit on. I know it has nothing to do with groceries but it has everything to do with saving money.

And I like that!

That is TOO AWESOME!! I did not know stores did that. :-) Thank you for passing that info along.

It makes me wonder if the school room we painted a couple of years ago could have been done cheaper... hmmm... I'm going to check with our paint stores and see if they do the same thing for our next painting project. :-)

That is so cool that you got the paint for $11!! The blue and tan will look great together! Maybe you can post some pictures when you get done ? :)

Walmart's paint is $11 a gallon - and we've always been happy with how it goes on....we've used it the last 2 or 3 times we've painted.

We call that "Oops Paint", my best friend's parents have used Oops Paint to redecorate cheap, for years!! But beware, sometimes it's Oops Paint for a reason :-)

Yup, at Home Depot it's called "oops paint" too. Sometimes you'll find 2-3 gals of the nearly same tint and you just know someone was heckling the poor clerk til they got just what they wanted!!!

At $5 a gal or $1 a pint, it's a great deal. And if you can get 2-3 of nearly the same shade, you just pour them all in a 5-gal pail and use your drill attachment thing to mix them well, and it's plenty to do a big room with some to spare. Just pour the leftover back into one of the pails and you have touch-up paint that way!

I've shown my cuz the value of HD's oops paint and she's done 4 rooms that way now. And just the other day I was thinking about repainting my back steps (they are farm green, like every other house on the road) and what did I find but a gallon of exterior in just the right shade of green!

Can't tell you how much I've saved using oops paint.

And, check Habitat for Humanities website for a location near you, because they also have great deals on paint at their "resale" shops, which are stores that anyone can shop at.
