Grocery Cart Challenge Recipe Swap

We eat lots of pancakes and waffles and things that require syrup at our house. We can go through at least one bottle of syrup per week for the six of us, but you may have noticed that it is never in my Weekly Shopping Trip pictures. That's not because we tap our own trees but it's because I use a recipe for homemade maple syrup and then refill our old giant Costco bottle and stick it back in the cupboard.

I've been doing it for months and the kids just now noticed.

Cheap Homemade Maple Syrup

4 cups white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 cups water
2 teaspoons maple flavoring (sometimes I use vanilla)
  • Mix the water and sugars in a pot and simmer for 15 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and stir in flavoring.
  • Cool and pour into container.
  • Does not need to be refrigerated.

To Participate:

  • Post a recipe on your blog with a LINK BACK HERE. PLEASE REMEMBER THE LINK!
  • Fill in the Mr. Linky with your name and recipe title and on the second line put the link directly to your recipe post, not your general blog address.
  • Then go look at all the other links and get great ideas for next weeks menu.

I make a similiar syrup, and we like it much more than store bought. I always thought it had to be refrigerated....thanks for letting me know otherwise! Oooohh..never thought of vanilla in place of maple!
Thanks!

Oh, that's such a great idea. Easy, frugal, and no high fructose corn syrup. Yea! Thanks!

Has anyone ever done this with Splenda?

I will have to try this, since it does not have any HFCS in it. If it has to be sweet I would rather have natural sugar. Thanks for sharing!

I've been looking for an alternative to BOTH the corn syrup kind AND the (expensive, REALLY expensive) real stuff. I'll have to try this out!

I will be trying this. Thanks Gayle. The only thing I am wondering is how it stands up to pure maple syrup health wise? Is it basically the same?

How cool! I don't have any maple flavoring but I will keep an eye out when I'm grocery shopping.

Can't wait to test out the syrup! I have been looking at a recipe for the same thing only in a smaller portion in my Southern Living cookbook but have always snubbed my nose up to it! Now that I know it's good I'm going to give it a try. Sorry I forgot to put the recipe name in the "link" above, the name is "Droplet" Apple Oven Pancake by the Kelley's!

Elaine PS you would know me if you saw me.....I'll look for you at the library and link up. Love your blog by the way!
