Do you know that the average women spends $150 - $200 per year on disposable pads and tampons? That's a whole lot of chocolate that I'm not able to buy just so I can hope that I'm not going to leak through my khaki pants onto my chair in church on Sunday morning. And there's still no guarantee that I'm safe.
But several of you have mentioned a reusable menstrual cup as a way to save money so I took it upon myself to contact the company that makes the DivaCup and see if they would be willing to let me review their product (they did) and then graciously they supplied two FREE DivaCups (a $35 value per cup) to give away to my readers.
Now before you get all grossed out let me tell you that is exactly why I poo-pooed away any notion of using one of these things. It sounded messy and nasty and just plain yucky. But when it meant a huge decrease in my grocery budget I started to warm to the idea.
I used it for the first time a few weeks ago and I'm kicking myself for pre-judging the thing. Not only was it way more comfortable than a hunk of tampon up there but it wasn't any more messy or difficult to use. And my plumbing wasn't in peril because there was nothing major to flush away.
The DivaCup can be worn for up to 12 hours at a time. On my heaviest day, which usually means a trip to the bathroom every hour to remove a super size tampon that hasn't done it's job, my DivaCup lasted 8 hours before I finally gave up and checked it. It could have lasted a lot longer but it's hard to get used to the fact that I can just forget about the darn thing and let it do it's job.
It took me about three days to get comfortable with inserting it and getting it in the right place but after that it was quick and easy. And I loved not having a used pad discreetly wrapped in toilet paper and shoved in my wastebasket where little hands might be able to find it.
But the best part for me was knowing that I will NEVER have to spend money on tampons or pads again. It's totally worth it. So head on over to the DivaCup site to have all your questions answered. They have a ton of information on FDA approval, silicone versus latex, environmental issues and all kinds of good stuff.
So if you are interested in winning one of your own here's how to enter...
- Leave me a comment! It's that easy. No hoops to jump through. Make sure there is some way to contact you if you win.

I was just complaning about the cost of pads and tampons.
jdhusted7290@bex.net
I've been wanting to try these! Thanks for the opportunity to get one free!
I have always wanted to try one of these, but am to embarassed to buy one, not sure why. I do use mama cloth so i don't have the expense of pads, but do still use tampons, and they are so darn expensive. BLAH!!! Hoping to win!!!
i had no idea i wasted so much money on that! that's more gross than a reusable feminine hygiene product lol!
i am blessed, will i be blessed on wednesday? we'll see!

Wow! What an idea! The savings would really add up over time. Sounds like something that would be worth a try.
I'll give it a try! You haven't steered me wrong yet!

Wow! 195 comments! That's crazy! I'm signing up just so I can give it a try. I've never even heard of these things and I have no idea how it's supposed to work (I can just about imagine, but it seems absurd...but so does the thought of a tampon). Anyway, thanks for the opportunity to win.
I've heard of them before and thought it sounded kinda gross, but like you I'm all for something that saves money and is reusable, not disposable. thanks,
Leanne

Great idea, hate spending $ on this stuff. Found a site to make your own napkins, but never got to it and wasn't very keen on having to wash them all of the time! karlowskys@toledotel.com
Gayle - I posted twice, I've never done this before so didn't know how it worked! Sorry

This sounds interesting, I'd love to try it. Rebecca
I would like to try one.
Thanks
i have heard that these are awesome! if i dont win i will buy one!! thanks!!-kate
I love how open & honest you are. I have been thinking of trying the diva cup. Next up you should try the washable pads.
I've heard of these but have been leery of trying one. Thanks for the give away!
I'm sceptical, but would like to win one to try!
Wow...I've never even heard of this. My extended family already thinks I am super thrifty. If I start using one of these they will think I've totally lost it! lol And I'm okay with that :-)
akweldy at juno dot com
Hmmm, still unsure about this thing, but willing to try if it's free! Great site, keep up the great work!
Amandaxox(at)gmail.com
I thought about trying this a few months ago! I sure hope I win so I can try it now! Thanks
I no longer need this :) but when I did, I used a similar item (different brand and made of latex) and LOVED it. I have been trying to convince my teenaged daughter to switch to cloth pads and she has been resistant. Maybe if I tell her she will have to start paying for her own supplies!
I SO want to try one of these--but as an only occasional tampon user, I'm not sure if I'm ready to shell out the bucks for a try.
Please enter me.
Sounds interesting.
swh919 at aol dot com
interesting... I no longer need these after my recent procedure, Hallelujah!!!
I have long wanted to try one of these.
I would love to try this too! I am using up the rest of me store bought stuff and then switching to something else. This might just be the thing.
Sounds interesting! Count me in!
L_Francis84@hotmail.com
Wow what a great idea, I'd love to try that out!!
Thanks so much!
I think God has big plans for you!
LOVE my diva. Hoping to win a back-up in case of loss, or possibly one for my daughter, if I can get her to make the leap.

I had to comment! I havbe been using a Diva cup for almost a year now and I will NEVER go back!
I have a bleeding disorder that causes horrible bleeding.. hourly trips to the bathroom when it is my time of the month. Using a tampon and a super pad every hour.. not good! Even then we were in for big problems.
Since switching to the diva cup, I am able to head to the ladies room every few hours and not worry about messes or mishaps.
It is not messy at all.. the first two cycles I wasnt great at the whole process of putting in and chainging, but now I feel I could do it in my sleep.
I can not recommend this product enough!!!! Once you use it, you will never go back!!!!!!
please enter me in the giveaway. pick me! pick me!
I would be willing to try this....I have debated about it but the cost is a little bit of an issue for me....
Great giveaway. I would love to win one.
please enter me in the contest.

Oh I had no idea they had this, I would love to win
I have SO wanted to try this forever! I don't know how many times I almost ordered one...but then didn't because I was afraid I wouldn't use it!
I'm glad you tried it out for us and told us all about it!!

I'd try it for free. I have an open mind. andipriest@gmail.com

jessie12980@yahoo.com
thanks for sharing this! sounds amazing and i would love to save money and not have to deal with the hassle of tampons any longer!
I've never heard of these before. It would definitely be a big savings and certainly worth a try!
Jakmanning@yahoo.com
thank you for the information! this product has now captured my interest and i would love to save $ and try something new!
email is aprilbgray@yahoo.com
I have been wondering about these myself. Thank you for such a great review :)
I sure hope I win, but if I don't I think I am going to invest the $35 in one :)
Another person who's wondered about these type of cups but hadn't wanted to spend the money.
Wow, never heard of it before, but anything is worth a try. Thank you.
I knew they made things like this, but I thought they were disposable, too.
Hmmm. I have heard of the Diva Cup before, but first of all, I have no idea where to get one. Secondly, the thought of spending $35 on something I might hate, and can't return is also a scary thought. This might be the best way to try it out - by winning it! Thanks for offering the contest!

I've heard of it before, and I'd sure give it a try.
this should be interesting! thanks!

I remember hearing about something like this at least 10 years ago, when I was already tired of having periods. But I never saw that at a store or heard anything more about it. How great to hear that this is now available, I would love to give it a try.
I'd love anything that would keep me from having to practically wear diapers to bed the first two days! We have stopped buying new sheets unless they are maroon or navy because I ruin every single set! groupmail at sktc dot net
Wow. That's just ... wow. I've never heard of such a device. I have to go check this website out now.
I would love to win this but with all those people I doubt I will. In case I do my email is

What are the odds that I'm actually going to win?
Ah well, hope springs eternal.
OK, I'm intrigued. I'd try this if I won it for free... but perhaps not if I actually had to go out and buy one myself. :) Here's hoping...
nanpharm@aol.com
I would love to give it a try.
I use cloth pads all the time, but would LOVE a Diva cup to remove disposable items from my life forever!

I've been wanting to try one of these! What a perfect opportunity to get one on the cheap.

I am not to sure if I am comfortable with the idea, but I would be willing to give it a try for FREE.
Wow, that's a lot of comments! I'm a bit scared to try, too, but would be willing to give it a try if I won one!
I've been wanting to try one for a while now but have been afraid to even with all the glowing reviews. It's nice to hear a good review from someone I "know".
momofjstm at hotmail dot com
I read about these a while ago and also heard the Manic Mommies talk about them on their podcast. I admit that they definitely have a gross out factor to them. But, I am willing to try them if I happen to win. I doubt I'll try one on my own, though.
Thanks for the giveaway, Gayle. Love your blog!

I'd love to try it, just for the "green" of it. I'm a recycling maniac and this is reason enough. I don't mind washing my hands!
I would love to try the diva cup. Thank you for the giveaway.

I've been kinda leery bout these too. But if they save money AND a million trips to the bathroom on my heavy days then count me in!
I've read about this for a few years ago, but I didn't want to spend that much money for something I might not like.
Melissa
I posted a blog about your contest. Enter me a second time please.
I'm interested. I've seen them at the health food store and turned my nose up at it. Now I think I'm beginning to see the light.
Would love to try and hopefully pass on the advice to other friends. becker_tr at sbcglobal.net

I'm sorry but I have to say this. Why don't you just stockpile on free tampons and pads when they are free at CVS or kotex is always free at Walmart with the $1 coupon.
I wanna be a diva! :-) I have actually heard great things about this product and would definitely love to try it.
Thank you for showing this to us!!! I had never heard of it before today. I looked up the closest store and it is over 100 miles away!!! I hope it comes closer soon, or, I could just win one. lol

I have never even heard of these. I am willing to give it a try anything to save some money.
tarajhartley@yahoo.com
hey, i'd give it a try. i've been considering options since i read about this, and other alternatives as a way of cutting down on the amount of plastic i use. not only good for the pocket, but good for the environment - to stop using disposable pads every month that are filling up some landfill with stuff that won't break down for years!
that really sounds interesting...please enter me
Hmmm.... Sounds so interesting. I'd love to try it! Thanks!!

I've been wanting to try one of these for a while now.
Also, anyone who's comfortable with cloth diapering should try cloth pads - make them yourself for the most savings or buy them. They last for around 5 years, and are much more comfortable on delicate skin than disposables!
khataya69 at yahoo dot com
Gayle, I am loving your blog. And I don't usually read blogs! My husband and I have just lowered our budget amount for a family of 5-ish. (Sometimes we feed a lot more, depending on which married daughter comes over at what time of day, or which teenagers pop in to visit with my two teenage daughters, or how many 20+ young men are hanging out with my 22 yo son, etc.) I've budgeted $100 total, for all the same categories you've mentioned--in other words, not just food! Thing is, anything "extra" we want to do that week, including homeschool activities or extra gas $$ to go to a specialist dr. appointment 45 miles from home, etc., has to come out of that $100. So basically, $100 is my limit, but I need to spend as little as possible so that there is something left over for all the incidentals. Anyway, I hear ya, sister, and thanks for your blog!
What a great give away! I'd love to try one! Hopefully I'll be lucky enough to win one!

I have been following your blog since last spring and finally signed up a couple months ago as an "official follower". I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your blog. It's definitely an inspiration to those of us trying to save money!
Funny that you posted this as a giveaway. I actually wrote a paper for a night class I took last year on "green" sources for feminine hygiene. Since then I have wanted to get the Diva to use but seem to have a hard time shelling out the money for one up front. I would love to be the recipient of your giveaway!
You've inspired me so much on your blog. Thank you. I've always wanted to try one of these, but didn't want to spend the money. Thanks for doing a giveaway. :)
Love your blog! Thanks for the contest.

Wow...sounds interesting. I'd love to give it a try. Thanks
Can't wait to try!

Pick me, pick me! I'd love to try one of these! Just started reading about them & although I get most of my "sanitary items" for almost free with coupons, I just hate dealing with "it".
I worked in an Ob/Gyn office for awhile and never encountered a patient that said anything about using one, so I'm intrigued by seeing how well it would actually work.
Alright, I'm intrigued...enter me.
I can't believe I used the words feminine hygiene in a post, but I did, and linked back to you. You're a real sanctifying influence on me! ;)
Wow! I have never seen these before. They are a little intimidating... but I would love to try them! :) Thanks for the chance to win one.
