Thrifty Beauty Products

I try to be frugal with all things, not just food. Beauty products are SO overpriced anymore that any way I can cut on cosmetic costs is a great thing. On that note, one of my favorite beauty rituals is to exfoliate.

I like to slough off the dead skin and oils that can accumulate on my skin overtime to reveal the last vestiges of my youth full face. (There's not a whole lot of youth left anymore so I have to work with what little I have left.) And instead of spending $10 on a bottle of fancy exfoliater I've found a quick, simple and cheap way to reveal the fresh skin underneath.

When washing my face I suds up my hands with the soap and then I sprinkle a teaspoon of sugar or salt to provide a grainy texture. Then I wash my face with the mixture, rubbing in a circular pattern, and rinse.

Voila! Fresh rosy skin.

Speaking of using sugar as an exfoliate: The gal that does my bikini wax suggests mixing some sugar with my body wash to exfoliate the bikini area & help prevent ingrown hairs. Works like a charm & it's cheap!

That works well for feet too. Put vasoline all over your feet. Then put some sugar in a plastic bag. Put the bag over your foot and rub rub rub. Then leave the bag on for a bit to hold in the moisture. Just sit back and watch a tv show or read a book. Then remove and wash off your feet.

I read about this same idea some time ago and tried it w/sugar and love it! I love the way it makes my face feel, so soft and smooth and clean. When I skip this evening routine, I can really tell a difference. Thanks for the post b/c I think it's a fabulous idea ... & thrifty.

Even more frugal is to just use a nubby wash cloth!

Loved the post. My favourite anti-aging skin care products are quite expensive so I could only afford them when they are on a special offer. I'm now trying to find natural ways to treat my face and body so any ideas are always gratefully received:) There's a great hub on hubpages http://hubpages.com/_1ddtnom1bdbq3/hub/The-Beauty-Parlour-in-Your-Fridge about making your own beauty treatments using only goodies that you have in the fridge - so should cost nothing for a real skin treat for face and body. Love the sugar ideas. Will be trying out Karen's suggestions for feet this evening. BTW what's a "nubby" face cloth?

One thing that will help preserve a youthful look is protecting your face from the sun. I use an oil-free sunscreen on my face year-round. A big family-size bottle is less than $10 and lasts a long time.

That makes me want to wash my face. :)

The Cosmetics Cop Paula Begoun recommends baking soda as an exfoliant for your face, I think she said sugar is too harsh (or maybe more costly). :)

So what kind of soap do you use? Do you recommend just lathering up with a bar of Ivory? I will definitely try this.

What are other ways you save on cosmetics? I gave up eyeshadow and now just use eyeliner and mascara whenever I want to 'dress-up'. I've also decided lipstick is not for every day.

I think I'm commenting for the first time. I enjoy your blog!

You know, I've never been a beauty product person. I just use regular body soap and drugstore lotion on my face. But I definately wear makeup everyday. If you go to my right sidebar on the bottom I have posts organize into topics and one of them is Frugal Beauty. That should take you to some other beauty ideas that you might be interested in.
