And Again With The Homemade Laundry Products

You know, I have to admit that I get a cheap thrill out of finding recipes for things that I just assumed I would always have to buy.

I’m really not a complicated woman to please.

So, one of the kids had a leaky scab overnight that bled all over my cream colored, Egyptian cotton, super high thread count sheets. Sheets that I probably won’t be able to replace for quite awhile.

And of course no one told me about it for at least three days. So the stain just kept soaking in and getting slept on.

So when I found it today I immediately ran down to squirt some pre-wash on it. But all that came out was air and a few spits of cleaner.

Arrgh!

So I searched google with a vengeance. I found a recipe and decided to give it a shot. I mixed it up in the empty pre-wash bottle, sprayed it all over my ruined sheets, scrubbed the stain with a brush, soaked it in cold water for a bit and then ran it through the washer.

And I’m happy to say that my Egytion Cotton Sheets will live to see another day…and so will the kid that bled all over them.

Laundry Pre-Wash Spray recipe

1/2 cup ammonia
1/2 cup liquid laundry detergent
Water

Put all the ingredients into a pint spray bottle.
Shake well before using.

I'm new to your blog and really love it! I really enjoy seeing the homemade cleaner recipes and hearing how they work for you. I'm currently working on using up what I have left of store bought and will start making my own and I'm really excited about it. Yep..I'm easy to please too I guess!

i was just going to say that my pre-treat is straight fels naptha -- i spritz the stain w/water and then rub it w/the bar of fels naptha. then i scrub it with a toothbrush or blot or whatever, then rinse and repeat till it comes out. it's worked pretty well so far!

Does that ammonia stink?
I have been using the homemade detergent straight on the stained spot - and no problems getting stains out.

do NOT use this formula with bleach. Ammonia and Bleach are the recipe for hydrochloric gas--which can be lethal.

I am new also but I love what I am reading. I do have a question though, do you use store bought or homemade detergent? Thanks!

The best thing for blood stains is hydrogen peroxide. Ideally, pour it on fresh blood and it virtually disappears, but I've used it on old blood stains too.

Love your blog! I wanted to comment on the blood stain though. I am a Nurse Midwife and attend births at home, so we do all the clean up of course. Hydrogen Peroxide takes blood out of everything!

My favorite thing for getting out tough stains is LA's Totally Awesome (http://www.lastotallyawesome.com/) this stuff I can buy at the dollar store (the real dollar store where everything is still a dollar! lol!) and it is super concentrated and you can use it for just about anything. Use it full strength for hard to clean items and dilute as necessary. This stuff takes out blood pretty much instantly when used full strength! Helpful for certain times of the month. I also got hair dye on my bathroom carpet and this took it out instantly. My friend moved into an older home and was afraid of having to replace the linoleum in her kitchen, but we used this full strength and it looks brand new! For a $1 a bottle you really can beat it!

Very smart to mix up your own stain remover, especially considering the price on the name-brand stuff.

Now I'm researching fels naptha since I don't like to use ammonia.

Love this idea. I'm definitely going to try this. One question, though - how much water?

Thanks,
Pam

Just enough water to fill the container.

Meghan,

The ammonia doesn't discolor the fabric. In fact, when my towels get stinky or mildewy smelling I'll throw a 1/2 cup of ammonoia in the whole load to get rid of odors. They come out fine.
