Grocery Cart Challenge Recipe Swap

If I haven't mentioned it before...I'm not perfect.

I know! Shocking isn't it?

Sometimes I have the best intentions of making a yummy loaf of yeast bread to go with a meal. But yeast bread takes time and sometimes I forget to start it and then it's too late to have it ready for a meal.

That's when I slip out this recipe and save my hiney with fresh bread that is fast. So if you're not perfect too, then maybe you'll have some use for this recipe.

Quick, Rich, Light, and Buttery Biscuits

3 cups flour

1/4 cup sugar

4 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar

3/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup shortening (I use butter flavored)

1 egg, beaten

1 1/4 cups milk (sometimes soy, sometimes powdered)

  1. Combine dry ingredients in mixing bowl.

  2. Cut in shortening.

  3. Add egg and milk until dough forms a ball.

  4. Knead on lightly floured surface 10-12 times only.

  5. Roll to 3/4 inch thick and cut with biscuit cutter. I use a drinking glass with a floured edge.

  6. Bake on lightly greased baking sheet for 12-15 minutes at 475 degrees or until lightly brown.

Do you have a recipe you'd like to share? Please link directly to your post, not your homepage and don't forget to include a link back to The Grocery Cart Challenge. Oh, and feel free to grab the new button.

Mmm...I'll definitely have to try this. Meal Plan and all and I still sometimes forget to do things ahead of time :)

These sound really good!

I sometimes forget to make our bread, too. Handy to also have HM bisquick mix in your fridge for those days.

That's a great recipe! Don't you just love the butter flavor shortening. I bake with it and it makes the cookies really soft.
Thanks for hosting!

I don't have any comment about your recipe. But, you're one of the only reasons that I look forward to Monday so I can see what you bought.

Thanks for posting this recipe. I'm definitely going to try it. I completely understand intending to bake a loaf of bread and then running out of day.

Have you checked out the book Artisan Bread in Minutes a Day? You can get it at the Longview Library. Really great book that I actually ended up buying because I liked it so much (Buy.com was the cheapest place). The Kelso Library might have it too, I just had my mom borrow before I forked over money for it as I wanted to see what all the fuss is about and she lives in Longview.

Thanks Melissa! The first time I looked at the library I couldn't find it. I reserved it now! Yahoo!
