Walk With Me In My Garden

All but one kid was gone this morning, a rare occurrence in this house. Hubs was downstairs doing work in his home office, Elijah was glued to a new video game that he recently bought with his hard earned lawn mowing dollars and I actually had free time. So I spent the morning in the garden.
Buttercrunch Lettuce

Squash

My first roma tomato of the season

I had mentioned I was going to try my hand at front yard gardening and here are some pictures.

This is my walk to the front door and if you look close under the window, you will find our pumpkin patch.

Out of at least a dozen seeds, we have three plants that actually survived. I chose pumpkins for the highly visible front yard because they just look so full and pretty when they are growing and I figured the vines will fill out my barren patch of dirt. Plus they will be so close to my front porch where they will become decorations during October and November before I turn them into pies.

What the heck is this? It doesn't look like a weed to me.

I also found a mystery plant in my garden beds that I can't identify and I need your help. I think it might be a pepper plant that decided to carry over from last year. Or maybe it's just a weed gone crazy. What do you think it is?

It kinda looks like a volunteer potato plant.

I think it might be a potato plant. I have some coming up out of my compost pile and that's what they are.

I love your idea of putting the pumpkins in the front yard! I hope you share more pics of them as they grow.
That mystery plant doesn't look like a pepper to me, but I'm no expert. I would've guessed a tree or shrub seedling. Do you have any trees/bushes near that have berries or seeds in the fall?

I think the pumpkins will look terrific in your front garden!

I don't think that's a pepper plant, at least not like the peppers I have. I've planted bell, hot banana, and mazzitti peppers and they all look identical. That doesn't look like any pepper plant I've seen. I have no suggestion as to what it might be though, so there you go. LOL

About the mystery plant... of course the picture only shows a top view, but it doesn't quite look "stalky" enough (for a bell pepper, anyway). Otherwise, I don't know. I guess the worst case would be if you pampered and took care of it all summer only for it to be a weed :P

I'm thinking maybe a potato? Did you even plant potatoes last year? If you missed one when you dug, it could have wintered over and sprouted.

Hey, I think you guys are on to something. I did pull a weed similar to it today and at the end I found a huge potato peeling that hadn't decomposed from the compost I spread in the fall. I bet that's it!! So do you think I should just leave it and see if I actually get a potato or pull the thing?

I think everyone is right - it looks like a potato. Leave it in there, you might get a lovely bunch of potatoes. Your garden looks great. I cannot wait until the day when I go out and see the very first tomato on one of the plants. Hopefully within the next few weeks!

Yeah, I'll have to go with potato too.

I had a lot of potatoes growing in my compost bin last year from buying sale potatos that half were rotten!
I dug them up and ate them!
No weeding, no watering, no worrying and no work...well except for digging them up.

I have never grown potatoes so I guess I couldn't weigh in on that, but I have done lots of peppers and that looks nothing like a pepper plant that I have seen :)

BTW I do a gardening meme on my blog on Thursdays if you want to join in!

Looks like a potato to me. Leave it in and get some free, no-work potatoes! :-)

OK, the others are probably more knowledgable gardeners than I am. But it reminded me of nightshade (which actually IS related to potatoes). If it starts growing pretty little purple berries, pull it out FAST!!!

I agree with the above, it doesn't look like a pepper. I am not sure what potato leaves look like. Keep it! And let us all know what it turns out to be!

Ah rogue compost plants! We have 3 of our own in various spots around the garden currently. Best I can tell, ours are cantaloupes ... or cucumbers.

I concur on the potato deal, which you confirmed by pulling up the other one. Let it hang out until fall and see what happens. Fun!

Looks like a potato plant to me. Either pile some soil around it or mulch around it with straw. You should get some potatoes from the plant as it looks healthy.

I had a volunteer potato plant last year and we harvested lots of yummy red potatoes last fall. They have volunteered again this year and I added a few of my own to get even more. I say leave it and love it!
