The Search Is Over: Homemade Dishwasher Detergent

I think I've tried EVERY homemade dishwasher detergent recipe known to man. But every single one of them left a film on my glasses and finally I gave up. The good news is that I found out that the dollar store brand (Sun) works just as well as any other store bought I've tried. The even better news is that I finally, after three years of searching, found a home brew that works and is way cheaper. I've found that the homemade detergents work differently in different types of water (hard and soft), but out of all that I've tried, this finally works for me. So experiment with it and let me know if it works for you.

ADD:

1 Tablespoon of Borax
1 Tablespoon of baking soda (not washing soda from the homemade laundry soap)

Pour into your powder dispenser and close the lid.

MOST IMPORTANTLY:

Fill your rinse reservoir with distilled white vinegar and then run your washer.

No film.

Shiny clean dishes.

AND a bonus because the vinegar cleans out your dishwasher and removes any odors.

That's so exciting...I've never tried the homemade kind b/c I've heard about the film. Can't wait to try it!

So are you saying that this formula works better with soft or hard water?

I have been using this for awhile now and I love it too ! I just do vinegar once a week . I make a big batch at a time using equal parts of each and 1 T per load I do rinse my dishes well before I put them in the dishwasher. It works for me !

I've used vinegar to clean my dishwasher for some time, but I've never seen a recipe for homemade dishwasher detergent - fantastic!

Linky is not working. Here is a link to my recipe for Cole Slaw. In that post, also find a link to Grilled Marlin (yum).

I'm trying to link up my Rhubarb Cream Delight(Cheesecake!), but it's not working for some reason. So I put the link in here. Thanks for hosting!

My store-bought supply is running low so I'll have to try this. Like you, the other homemade stuff left film on things, which I didn't like. Yay for new recipes to try!

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I hate dishwasher detergent because of all the bad stuff in it, yet I can't afford to buy the "green" stuff all the time. Now I have the best of both worlds - cheap and healthful!

I love your blog, and especially your home-made frugality. A woman after my own heart!

You read my mind. I gave one of those eco-friendly brands a try and it was worthless. I thought about baking soda and vinegar, but didn't know how to make it work. Seperate resevoirs, duh?! Thanks Gayle! Blessings!!!

Funny, that's the only homemade dishwasher detergent recipe I've ever seen! What others are even out there?? Anyway, I've tried this one, and I did get the film. I only use it if I'm out of the Sun powder and can't get to the store right away. Maybe my water is different. Glad it works for you though.

I use a homemade detergent similar to this one but if my water is super hard, then I have to go with the commercial stuff. I haven't figured out the right combo for my super hard water.

I may try to add some salt to the mix and see if that will fix the problem.

OMGosh! I've used this forever! I've never tried anything but and I'm glad to know it's the best one you've found. Thanks!

Yay! I just started using homemade laundry detergent a few weeks ago and have been looking for automatic dishwasher detergent as well. I just ran out of the store-bought, so I'm going to try this now! :)

Rinse reservoir? I don't know if I have a rinse reservoir. I have never heard of that (nor noticed it). I hope I do so I can try this!

Is the "rinse reservoir" the place where the Jet Dry goes?

I am SO excited for this recipe! :)

Wow! Baking soda and borax! This would be for the dishwasher, right? I have those ingredients on hand all the time (make my own laundry soap and use baking soda to scrub the tub). But first I need to use up the natural stuff I bought from the co-op...

I must have the wrong kind of water because this is exactly what I"ve been using (though I use only about one tablespoon of the mixture and it leaves everything coated in a white residue. I pour about a 1/2 cup of vinegar in the door with every wash and as well as filling the rinse aide resivore with vinegar and still having trouble. I was so hopeful that this recipe was gonna be the answer to my issues!

I have very hard water and all of my glasses and clear glass bowls looked awful. The inside of my dishwasher is stainless steel and it was also awful. I make jelly and noticed that after I used citric acid, the spoon was very shiny. So I experimented filling the detergent bowl with citric acid and washed the worst glasses (they were so cloudy and yukky that my husband told me to throw them away and buy new...so I felt I had nothing to lose!) What a shock when I opened a glistening clean dishwasher and found like new glassware. Now I use a very small amount in every load..sprinkle it on to of the regular detergent. I buy it at a local bulk food store for $1.59 a jar and it lasts for weeks. I wonder if you could add it to your recipe of homemade dishwasher soap if your water is hard like mine?
