Freebies Are Fun

Today was one of those heaps of blessings days.

  • Our taxes were finished just in time to wrap up my financial aid (we're talking last minute, folks) they cost less than we expected, and THEN we're getting a nice little tax return.
  • Next, we found a FREE pedestal sink to go in our daughters bathroom (which has been sinkless for the past two years). Sign up for freecycle in your area if you haven't already.
  • And to top it all off, I know a guy, who knows a guy, who knows a guy......that works at a grocery store. When they rotated stock today I was the lucky recipient of five giant boxes of breads, dented cans, bunged up boxes of pasta salads and oatmeal and all kinds of goodies.
Here's a picture of my stuffed freezer. It just doesn't even do it justice. The whole top shelf is stuffed with bagels. You can't even see the shelves on the door that are stuffed. There were loaves of sliced bread, artisan loaves, english muffins, garlic bread, rolls....and I even gave some of it away. (Can you see my bargain turkey hiding in there from Thanksgiving? I need to use that thing up!)

Good day, indeed!

I love freecycle too! We just got a one of those really great wooden swing set/fort things for the kids last week from a freecycler. It's a little old and needs a few pieces of wood replaced, but free with a few repairs is much better than $599-999 as advertised in the Sunday paper!

How exciting about the free food! Must be the "season" for freebies. My oldest works a short summer camp and at the end they gave out all kinds of free food to the kids (leftovers from the food program that they can't return anywhere). Cases of stuff were given to the kids' families! Well, the "counselors" got stuff too. We ended up with 3 (!!) cases of singles of apple sauce, 1 1/2 CASES of baby carrots (wow!) (eating lots and canned some for soups and stews this winter), a case of Oscar Meyer lunch meats (I froze these), a case of apple juice singles, a case of G2, a bunch of yogurt (not sure what to do with all that-will it freeze??), 2 cases of cereal bars. Anyway, its been a godsend because things are REALLY tight at my house. Lots of car repairs and we're living out of the pantry. LUCKILY, the pantry just got a little bit sweeter!

I think so much food goes to waste at grocery stores, etc. Too bad they don't put it out there more often. Just think of all the produce that gets tossed at Walmart. (just think of all that potential banana bread alone from the overly ripe bananas!) They never have a "reduced" vege/fruit basket like locally owned stores do.

Anyway, the freebies are always a blessing!

JeanneMO - YES, Yogurt freezes very well, actually. My mom used to freeze those little containers and then stick them in our lunch boxes. They kept the food cold and by lunch it was thawed!

So GLAD to find out I can freeze yogurt! They threw a whole case away. Awww! Sickening. But I will stick the rest of what I have in the freezer for lunches. Thanks for the tip!

Reminds me of a local church's praise song: "Thank You, Lord, for your blessings to me - You just keep giving abundantly!" That's fabulous!
