Hmmm, did you have chicken tucked away for your chicken dinner? I'm amazed at how well you do each week. Just curious, it seems you have sandwiches for lunch - what kind do you make? Peanut butter, meat or lots of egg salad? I rarely see peanut butter or peanuts or lunch meat/cheese in your grocery lists.......thanks in advance for your response, Mary

Mary,

Yes. I altered the recipe and instead of using expensive chicken breasts, I had some leftover chicken from a roast as well as a frozen turkey breast in the freezer. Plus, I very seldom use the amount of meat called for in a recipe. I usually use less.

We don't eat many sandwiches. The kids grab their own lunches and it usually consists of hard boiled eggs, fresh veggies or fruit, muffins if they are on hand, or a particularly tasty leftover. The kids are home with me all day so they don't have to pack and take a lunch to school.

For a one stop shop you did quite well! :)

I didn't need much at the store this week because I still have meat in the freezer and the pantry shelves are still relatively full so I picked up some of the "could not pass up" deals and a few necessities.

I ended up saving more money than spending and that is a good thing. :) I spent $53 and saved $62 and still had some cash leftover! :)

Great week! We're eating from our stockpile...mostly. I went with some friends yesterday to a Farmers Market and picked up organic Milk, purple potatoes, grapes, fresh mint, regular potatoes, dried dill weed, bananas and avocados. I got out under $20.

Gayle, I've been reading your blog for a while now. I am trying to get our food bill down. (3 boys 12, 10, 4) I spend so much on milk and juice. How do you make one gallon of milk last a week?

How do you eat the sardines??
I am wanting to add more fish into my lunches and have that about sardines. I do like anchovies on
pizza so I figure I would like sardines.

Mary,

I shop often like Gayle and many of my readers as the same question what do I serve for lunch? The answer for us is Tuna melts, egg salad, last week I made a turkey and the left overs were for sandwiches. My kids homeschooled until highschool but even in highschool they would take homemade soup in a packed lunch, cottage cheese, hard boiled eggs, or just slices of cheese and peanut butter crackers. This week I am making two whole large roasting chickens and leftovers will be various lunches.
Salad was one of the girls favorites to take to school (I must confess my frugal self got caught one time putting salad dressing in a pill bottle so she could dispose of the container easily after lunch) I got told by the principle DO NOT EVER DO THAT AGAIN!
He was nice about it since he did realize my four had been homeschooled until high school. I also made the mistake one time of sending a butter knife that did not go over well either. So just gotta put on a better thinking cap.
