So I had to make an extra trip to the store
Here's what I added to my original shopping trip this week.
25 lb bag of flour $7.98
3 lbs apples $2.47
Bulk Powdered Milk $2.10
Lemon Juice $1.58
4 lbs bananas $2.04
3 lbs grapes $2.13
Total $18.30 + Mondays Total = $71.90
I just wanted you to see that sometimes even I have to go back to the store.

Bummer...the nacho casserole looked like it would have been delicious!
By the way, how would you store bulk powdered milk? What type of container do you use?
But, even if you did have to make a trip back to the store, at least you didn't cave and go for takeout! :)
Oops! I did that to the meatloaf that I was baking when company was over during the last minutes when I went to put it back in the oven. Hope you were able to whip up something else quickly!
I love your blog! You share so much information with everyone! I am using alot of your tips to tame our household budget and get our debts paid down. Thanks for all of your help!!
We ended up having pancackes which used up all my flour. I get a little panicky when I don't have flour. I have a collection of great 1.5 gallon glass jars that are short and squat with white plastic lids. I store my powdered milk in those inside my cupboard.
Oh, I'm so sorry! What a mess. I broke 4 serving platters in one opening of a cupboard 2 weeks ago. All due to me not stacking them very well... I'm still dreading shopping for replacements.
Totally hate it when that happens! I am such a klutz in the kitchen. I've managed to cut myslef 4 times this week, and jab my pinky w/a knife. Thinking I need to either stay away from sharp objects or the kitchen!
I, too, panic w/no flour!
I feel so bad for you! I seriously will cry if I ruin dinner... I really get emotional over spilled milk LOL
where do you get a 25lb bag of flour at? i've never seen them that big at the grocery store. or did you go to costco or something?
Not crying over spilt milk was litterly one of the hardest lessons I had to learn as a parent. Especialy now with it totaling $3.14 at the Wal-Mart 20 miles away, or $3.65 at the store down the street. I feel your pain, and I wanted to cry too.
Blessings, Beth Ann
Oh, that's heartbreaking!
I thought I was one of the only people who bought 25# of flour at a time! My kids used to tease me until they watched how quickly it was used up! Ü

That is just so sad! I hope tomorrow is a better day :)
I got the flour on the shelf at Win-co. Come to find out when you buy it in that big of a bag it's cheaper than bulk. Bulk is 34 cents a lb. This came to 31 cents per lb.
NOOOOOOOOO!!!! That casserole looks really good, even smashed and full of glass. For about .2 of a second I would have wondered about salvaging it, but the shards of glass and all would be a deterrent. Is it wrong to say that it made me feel better that even you has to go back to the store- even if it was because you opened your house and were generous?
As sorry as I am about the casserole, I am grinning about your honesty. I love what you are about!
Have you ever made homemade baking powder? If not, I have a recipe!
Been there, done that! Well, it does match quite nicely with your floor!
Do you use the powdered milk in your baking or to drink? I was at Winco recently and it seemed like the powdered milk wasn't much cheaper than the liquid milk (at least, on that day, or unless I figured wrong).
I use powdered milk mostly for baking but I also use it for drinking. I mix it with 1/2 regular and 1/2 powdered and the fam doesn't know the difference. I believe it's $3.13 per lb at my Win-co and it's very light stuff. 1/4 cup dry makes 1 cup liquid.
So sad to see your delicious meal on the flour!
I ran out of flour totally at Christmas and vowed never to do that again!
Bless your heart! Don't you hate cleaning up something that would have been so good!
Oh no, what a mess!
Bless you for opening up your house. It will come back to you.
Awwww, I'm so sorry about the casserole that bit the dust. You are so sweet to feed extra friends during the floods. 31 cents a lb on flour is awesome!!
Oh No! When you are on a budget ... that HURTS! Wish I could say I haven't done that more than once! Bless you for helping others, though.
This may sound like a dumb question, but when you are cooking, you just use powdered milk instead of real? It never occurred to me. But with the cost of milk, and our love for it, it sure would be cheaper to cook with it! I'm assuming you just follow the instructions on the box???
That sounds like a great price for the powdered milk. Around here the cheapest I can find is $12.99 for a 20 Qt box. And that's at Aldi's 20 miles away.
We also buy flour 25lb at a time.
I feel your pain. I dropped a lasagne this summer. The tomato sauce splattered all over my "just cleaned" white cabinets, and fell into the spaces on the wood floor. It took forever to clean up. We just ate a frozen pizza that night. It happens to the best of us!
I just noticed the link on a friends page. WOW you can manage a family of six on a 60$ budget? We are a family of four and we do ok with 50 most of the time.
That casserole looked really good
what is your recipe for Nacho casserole?
